APAC’s Economic Prospects Amid Uneven Global Recovery

The global economy is continuing to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that recovery is patchy and uneven across countries and regions. In this session, we will set out Moody’s expectations for the Asia-Pacific region, including the implications of developments in China and the US, the on-going reconfiguration of global supply chains, and the degree of economic scarring due to the pandemic.  Significant downside risks remain, compounded by rising environmental and social risks.

    Keynote Interview

Unprecedented policy support has matched the extraordinary nature of the COVID shock, providing an essential buffer to corporates and financial institutions globally. At the same time, sovereigns will continue to bear the brunt of the long-term costs of the pandemic and face the challenge of addressing wide-ranging demands from greater equity to climate change.

    • How do we look back at the COVID policy experiments so far? What policies are likely to prove successful?
    • How will governments’ role evolve in a post COVID world?
    • What governments are best/worst placed to face such wide-ranging demands?

Trends & Risks Shaping Sovereigns 2022

APAC’s economic recovery will continue into 2022, improving revenue prospects and allowing governments to start unwinding some of the extraordinary stimulus during the pandemic. However, economies will likely face new challenges as they shift gears to a phase of recovery and normalization amid medium-term social and environmental considerations. How policymakers navigate through these challenges, while rebuilding buffers that have shrunk over the past two years, will be key in determining the overall credit impact.

    • What are the key fiscal- and monetary policy challenges governments face in the APAC region?
    • How are economic strategies changing in a post-COVID world?
    • What are the key drivers that will differentiate sovereign credit?

The panel will feature a group of Moody´s sovereign experts that will compare trends and contrast the salient credit strengths and vulnerabilities of APAC countries.
